Predictive Processing

Predictive processing is a theory in neuroscience that the brain constantly generates expectations about the world and updates them with sensory input, rather than passively recording what the senses report. Three essays build on it. One explains how expectation, emotion and memory shape perception, one uses it to question whether we live in a simulation, and one asks whether awareness is a simplifying interface the brain constructs, with parallels to how machine systems work.
